Voices on Branding · a collaborative series
What is branding?
I put that one question to brand builders around the world and asked each of them for a quote. Ninety-nine answered, and I added my own, across 28 countries and 6 continents. Different voices, different angles, one collective view of branding. These definitions, together with the research behind them, are becoming a book, with every contributor credited by name.

Brand management is about building a true asset; an asset that creates value from its promise being consistently kept. Great brands invest in provocative insights that anticipate shifting consumer needs, align their organization through competencies, structures, and systems, and cultivate an inspiring vision and culture. This creates a brand that is measurable and accountable, growing as a leader-led business system.

Brand, the cumulative result of a person's interactions with, experiences of and beliefs about a business (its products/services). A space held in the mind's eye. Strong brands must deliver across the board. Where 'delivery' is out of kilter with the promise made, then it stands to fall at the first hurdle; where product or positioning are poor, great service won't save it!

Branding is the active process of shaping customer perception to drive business results. It involves meticulously managing every customer touchpoint, from advertising to customer service. The goal is to create a consistent and positive brand image that resonates with the target audience. Crucially, this means ensuring congruence between your brand's promise and how it's actually perceived. Forget mere "authenticity"; focus on delivering a tangible, valuable experience. The ultimate aim is a perception that compels customers to choose you, boosting sales and fostering loyalty.

Branding – the collection of assets that identify and distinguish a brand. This includes visual elements like logo, colour palette and typography, as well as other sensory cues such as jingles, sound logos or a distinctive scent. Some people use the term more broadly to describe the entire process of building a brand, but I believe the narrower, asset-focused definition is more commonly used.
